On the Modeling of Spar-type Floating Offshore Wind Turbines

In this paper an overview about floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT) including operating conditions, property and applicability of the barge, tension-leg, and spar floating platforms is described. The spar-floating offshore wind turbines (S-FOWT) have advantages in deepwater and their preliminary design, numerical modeling tools and integrated modeling are reviewed. Important conclusions abou...

The effect of second-order hydrodynamics on floating offshore wind turbines

Offshore winds are generally stronger and more consistent than winds on land, making the offshore environment attractive for wind energy development. A large part of the offshore wind resource is however located in deep water, where floating turbines are the only economical way of harvesting the energy. The design of offshore floating wind turbines relies on the use of modeling tools that can s...

SHM of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines— Challenges and First Solutions

The paper presents an integrated SHM-system for floater, moorings, tower, nacelle and rotor blades. Its core is based on a multivariate SHM-system for rotor blades with three different measuring techniques accompanied by appropriate signal processing approaches:  Acoustic Emission (AE) is used for identification of relative small damages at the whole blade, e.g. bursts of fibres, cracks of bon...

Semiactive Control for Floating Offshore Wind Turbines Subject to Aero-hydro Dynamic Loads

Wind and wave dynamic loads might cause undesirable vibrations that affect the structure integrity and system performance of floating offshore wind turbines. This paper addresses the problem of dynamic load mitigation by using semiactive control techniques with the tuned liquid column dampers placed on the turbine’s tower. The control law is formulated based on the mixed H2/H∞ methods for ensur...
